It’s time to crush your competition
The construction industry has peaks and plateaus and as an industry veteran, you are fully aware of the impact those plateaus can have on your bottom line.
Some parts of the country have the blessing of sunshine all year round, but for those that don’t, inclement weather takes a toll. It’s no shock that construction businesses take one of the biggest hits during those cold winter months. with fewer projects and more down time.
During that slow time, it’s easy to get caught up in periods of relaxation and thoughts like these. “There’s always tomorrow to get that done.” But here’s a question: Don’t you think your competition is doing the exact same thing? Now is your chance to get one, two, three steps ahead of your competition. Really take advantage of your slow season.
- Build your leads and grow your network: You may not have any big jobs coming your way right now, but talk to the people who help you get them when the season is booming. These next few months are a great time to sift through referral partners, former customers, or anyone else who you think could send you some new business.
- Hold training sessions: It’s hard to get these going in the busiest times of the year because you don’t want to take your staff off the jobs to get them done. Safety seminars and other trainings, though, are a really important part of running an efficient (and safe) construction business. Take this time now to get your team up to speed.
- Enhance your marketing: Another way to build your lead pool, marketing is something that may not be on the top of your mind in the summer months. You can do marketing in so many ways. Email, direct mail, flyers posted at different local businesses, social media, the list goes on. Find the one that works for you and put together a strategy. When the calls start coming in to line up jobs for spring, you’ll be glad you did.
- Implement more efficient processes: The new year is always a good time to reflect on what worked and what didn’t in the previous one. Ask yourself if all of your current processes are truly the best way to do business. Still using spreadsheets? Hard to uncover materials and laborers needed from job to job? Can’t keep track of projects from bid to won? Time to upgrade to an app that handle all of that for you. Do some research, and talk to the right people. Implement something new now before the busy rush.
- Consider indoor projects: Outdoor jobs might be your niche, but if you want some extra cash during the winter try to find some indoor projects you can work on. Anything from remodeling to repair can help keep you and your staff busy. Plus, your competition may be sleeping on the job. They may not be taking the extra step to find new, different work.
- Review your target markets: Are the jobs you traditionally do large enough to sustain you year-round? Take some time to think that through. If you realize that maybe you will need some extra cash flow, reevaluate your market and be open to expanding your horizons next year.
- Attend tradeshows: If you have a little extra cash to spare, attending an industry tradeshow or conference is a great learning opportunity. It can also be used to scout out your competition. Just walk the floor and see what everyone else has going on, gather ideas, ask questions, and come back refreshed.
- Upgrade old equipment: You can’t work at full efficiency if your equipment isn’t up to par. You also can’t win jobs over competitors if their equipment is better. Time to upgrade!
- Keep your employees busy: It’s easy to fall into a slump with not a lot of work to do. But it’s important to keep your employees engaged and happy all year long. This will make them even more productive when things start picking up.
- Get organized: Never quite found the time to file away old documents or clean out your office? Well, you have the time now. You never know what you might find as you go through paperwork. Getting organized is the first step to running an efficient and profitable business. It’s definitely something to get done over the next few months.
It may be a slow time for your construction company, but it’s the time to crush your competition. Don’t just sit around this winter. Get out there and take your business to the next level.
