The restaurant business is booming
Chances are, you work with a number of different industries on construction projects. From municipalities to office buildings and maybe even restaurants.
If you aren’t overly involved in restaurant construction right now, though, you should be. The restaurant business is booming. So much so that in 2016, $6 billion more dollars were spent in restaurants than at grocery stores. The “foodie” generation, mixed with need for easy food options, has created a new dynamic around restaurants.

Restaurant owners are constantly searching for new ways to appeal to their customers and draw them in.
As you begin your plans for your next restaurant construction project, here are some ideas you can bring to the table; ideas that are driving the restaurant design today.
- New and innovative ways to stand out: Because there is so much competition surrounding the restaurant business, owners now need to have a unique idea. Delicious food and a great dining experience will get patrons to come back, but first they have to actually go in. Your construction plans will help get them in the door. Suggest more glass for natural light or an outdoor seating option, or even just a different structural design. And stay away from anything cookie-cutter.
- Listen to not only the owner, but the chefs: You know construction, but they know the clientele they are trying to target. Get both the chef and owner’s opinions and ideas when designing. Many times, they wont feel a real connection to the building if they don’t have a say in what it looks like.
- Think ‘Fast Casual’: The majority of Americans that eat out don’t want a sophisticated, expensive dining experience. They want something quick and casual with excellent food quality. You can’t control the food, but you can control what they see from the outside. If the owners are going for that Fast Casual look, you want the building to match it. Think about architectural designs that don’t portray something too high-class.
- Inside design matters, too: We know we don’t have to tell you that but when it comes to restaurants the look and feel of the inside matters even more. Fast casual or not, diners still want to feel some kind of special when they go out to eat. Art on the wall, mood lighting, cool and unique design elements throughout the space, all of those contribute to a great dining experience. Restaurant building may be one of those projects where you work together with an interior designer to get everything exactly right.
Restaurant construction has the potential to be a really great opportunity for you. Focus on all the right things and restaurant owners will be chomping at the bit to hire you.
