Word of mouth only goes so far in today’s world. Yes, building a client base and customer loyalty is important to a business’s survival, but these days the Internet is King. When potential clients need a job done, chances are 95% of them will look to the Internet to find the right company. To gain their business and their trust, you need to be there front and center.
Don’t know anything about marketing your business? That’s alright, these suggestions will help guide you, or at least give you a place to start.
- Make your website mobile-friendly: SimilarWeb reported that in 2017 over 55% of users access websites on a mobile device. That’s up nearly 4% since 2016, and it’s going to continue to grow. This means having a website that’s only desktop-friendly is not enough anymore. Look for a new website design that’s mobile-friendly and implement it ASAP. Google also favors websites that have a good mobile rendering so it’s definitely not something you want to ignore.
- Get on social media: Or at least get on Facebook. Facebook is one of those platforms where you can list business hours, post pictures of jobs, remind customers of your services, and even let clients leave reviews. All of those things help Google find you when customers do a search.
- Start a blog: Would you consider yourself an expert in your field? If so, show it. Write about topics in the construction industry you know your customers (or potential customers) will care about. You don’t have to be a brilliant writer to jot down a few paragraphs about a topic you already know everything about.
- Learn a little something about SEO: SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the way Google finds websites to show on their pages. The more keywords you have on your webpages that are relevant to the searches people are making, the more likely you are to be found. That’s why blogging and social media is so important. There are tons of websites (Hubspot, Moz, Search Engine Land, etc) that you can visit to learn what SEO is and how to implement it on your site.
- Ask for customer reviews: Reviews will not only help you get found on the Internet, but it will get potential clients to stay interested in your business. The more 5 star reviews or positive praises you get, the better chances you have of winning that customer. It’s easy to generate reviews. Solicit your existing, loyal customers through an email campaign and ask for them to leave a review on your Facebook or sign up for a review site like TrustPilot and ask them to leave you one there.
If reading this list overwhelms you, stop and take a breather. Then think about hiring a marketing person at your company. It can be a freelancer or a part-timer, but it’s someone you can bring in to take care of these things for you. Leave your expertise for the next construction job and let them take over.
