Tips for preventing construction site accidents

Jobsite accidents can be avoided

Construction accidents are not uncommon. Because construction sites are often loaded with hazards like heavy machinery, equipment, materials, and other tools, safety should be the number one priority. By instilling safety procedures and training at your construction company, jobsite accidents can be avoided.

We’re sure you are not unfamiliar with safety prevention, but in case you want a few extra tips here are a few ways you can avoid construction site accidents.

  1. Practice good driving habits: For heavy machine operators, there are a few rules drivers have to follow. As examples, vehicle warning strobes are needed to alert incoming traffic, daytime running lights and safety spotters are required, they have to slow down when backing up, etc. Despite whether you are familiar with these rules or not, it’s a good idea to train your drivers on a regular basis to avoid any accidents.
  2. Encourage a warm up exercise: Starting the day with a quick warm up can help keep the body nimble and flexible. Construction jobs are labor intensive so having a fresh start to every day will help keep your workers alert.
  3. Hang warning signs: In places where there could be falling debris, wires, high voltage, or other dangerous hazards, clearly labeled signs should be hung up to alert workers and passersby not to enter.
  4. Wear reflective clothing: This is increasingly important during those night jobs, but really highly-visible clothes should be worn by all employees at all times to avoid vehicle accidents.
  5. Proper safety gear: Hardhats, eye and ear protection, harnesses, and other gear should be on site and worn 100% of the time. Materials can fall accidentally or a destruction project may not go as planned so you want to make sure all of your employees are protected.
  6. Regular safety meetings: Safety meetings should be held before each job to discuss with everyone the specifics. You want all workers to be informed about safety measures with each job site, materials used, and other hazards that may come up. This will ensure that your whole team is constantly kept up-to-date and you can feel confident that everyone will be safe.
  7. Limit night jobs: Because of the limited light during night jobs, it’s obviously more difficult and dangerous to perform simple tasks. Your workers can be more tired than normal and accidents can take place. We know some jobs, like repaving a highway, can almost always only be completed at night when there is less traffic. However, whenever possible you want to try and limit the amount of night projects you take on. If it is necessary to work at night, see numbers 4 and 5 on this list to make sure your team is safe and protected.
  8. Take frequent breaks: Encourage your workers to refuel, stretch, even take a 10-minute snooze if they are feeling fatigued. The last thing you need is an employee on a tough job who is overworked and not at 100%.

Workplace accidents are avoidable when all the proper safety steps are taken. With these 8 tips plus your own safety regulation and procedures you will be well on your way to an accident-free business.
